Winding through the valley, the route is dotted with over twenty scenic stops, each offering its own blend of wonder. From captivating art installations and panoramic viewing platforms, to informative signage and peaceful picnic shelters, these stops invite you to pause and soak it all in. Stand in awe at Newman’s Lookout, where sweeping views of the Murray Valley are crowned by a striking Bogong Moth sculpture. Near Bellbridge, the playful ‘Are We There Yet?’ installation offers a whimsical moment of reflection above the shimmering expanse of Lake Hume and the graceful Bethanga Bridge. And at Mount Alfred Gap (the halfway point) a powerful sculpture pays homage to the region’s soaring sentinel, the majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle.

The Great River Road is home to some fantastic scenic lookouts along the Murray River, where stunning vistas and thoughtful art installations come together to elevate the road trip experience. With breathtaking Murray Valley views and larger-than-life artworks, this stretch of road offers plenty of opportunities to pause, snap, and take in the beauty of the region.
You’ll find a postcard view at the Bellbridge lookout, with Lake Hume and the heritage-listed Bethanga Bridge stretching out in front of you. It’s the perfect spot to kick off your journey or take a moment to soak up the scenery. From here, the route winds through scenic landscapes dotted with creative art stops.
One of the most snapped art installations is the Bogong Moth sculpture at Jim Newman Lookout, a striking piece celebrating the natural world and First Peoples’ connections to the area. Meanwhile, John Wood’s ‘Are We There Yet’ sculpture, near Bellbridge in the west, adds a playful, reflective touch for travellers.
For those chasing golden hour magic, there are several sunset lookouts along the touring route, including Mount Alfred Gap – where you’ll find sweeping views of the Murray River and beyond (and a sculptural homage to the wedge-tailed eagle) – to epic vistas from the summits of Pine Mountain, Mount Granya, and Mount Mittamatite.
The Great River Road is not only a proper driver’s and rider’s road, but a wonderfully scenic driving route tracing the prestine upper reaches of the mighty Murray River. Flanked by national and state parks, lake and river reserves, and plenty of art destinations, the various lookouts and viewpoints along the Great River Road rarely disappoint.
