There are few better places to fish than the Great River Road. From Lake Hume in the west to Khancoban Pondage in the east, and along the banks of the Murray River itself, you’ll find Murray Cod, Brown Trout, Redfin, and Golden Perch. Fishing highlights along the upper Murray River

The Great River Road region is a haven for anglers, offering some of the best fishing spots along the Murray River. From iconic river reserves to tranquil creeks and boat ramps, this stretch of the Upper Murray delivers plenty of opportunities for fishers of all skill levels.

Start your ‘fish-pedition’ at Bethanga Bridge or Talgarno, where scenic river views combine with excellent fishing conditions. The Bellbridge Boat Club provides convenient access to Lake Hume, a prime spot for calm waters and recreational fishing, with species like Brown and Rainbow Trout, Golden Perch, and Redfin.

Further downstream, spots like Neils Bend, Burrowye Bend Murray River Reserve, and Clarke’s Lagoon Wildlife Reserve are perfect for those who want to camp and fish. These areas are known for their Murray Cod fishing and provide accessible spots for anglers to relax and cast a line.

Dedicated fishers could head to Jingellic, Walwa, and Tintaldra, where the cod runs wild and the beers flow. For cool waters, clear streams, and trout fishing, visit Nariel Creek or Swampy Plains River. For those needing a boat ramp, head to Bellbridge, Khancoban, Walwa, or Jingellic.

Fishing along the Upper Murray River will continue to improve as stocking levels are maintained, and more locals and visitors choose to release most of the cod they hook. Wherever you choose to cast a line, please ensure you have the appropriate recreational fishing licence and are aware of local regulations before fishing.
