A stunning drive from Lake Hume to the source of the Murray River

Starting at the historic Bethanga Bridge in the west, the 155 km Great River Road meanders through Bellbridge, Talgarno and Granya, before continuing to Jingellic and Walwa, each with its own welcoming pub. Pine Mountain, Mount Mittamatite, and the Murray River itself add dramatic scenery as the route winds through the historic towns of Tintaldra and Towong, finishing in either Corryong, famed for its link to The Man from Snowy River, or Khancoban, nestled in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains.

Highlights

Bethanga Bridge

Start your drive at Bellbridge, which has epic views of the heritage-listed, nine-span Bethanga Bridge. From there, the road hugs the foreshore of Lake Hume and heads eastward to Talgarno and the Wymah Ferry.

Art Installations

Dotted along the route are several art pieces. The ‘Bogong Moth’ at Jim Newman Lookout and Xavier Pinnard’s ‘Are we there yet’ installation near Bellbridge are a couple of highlights.

Granya Falls & Summit

Granya is a small township surrounded by stunning nature. Mount Granya State Park is a short drive and offers walks and longer hikes. For those with good legs Granya Falls and Mount Granya Summit are well worth it.

Camping & Caravan Parks

There are some very lovely campgrounds along the route – many right by the river, along with several excellent caravan parks. Here are a few examples: Kurrajongs, Burrowye, Gadds Bend, Neils Bend, Clarke’s Lagoon, Indi Bridge and Corryong.

Mount Alfred Gap Lookout

Mount Alfred Gap is the halfway point of the Great River Road, offering panoramic views over the Murray. Look out for native flora, fauna, and a sculpture honouring the majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle.

Jingellic

Jingellic is a peaceful village nested on the banks of the Murray River. Here you’ll find the excellent 100 year-old Jingellic Pub, the Bridge Hotel, while the nearby Jingellic Reserve is home to the Andrew Whitehead sculpture, Joe the Firie.

Walwa

Walwa charms with scenic river views, the inviting Walwa General Store, the characterful Walwa Hotel, and the well-appointed Walwa Caravan Park. This north east Victorian town is perfect for picnics and exploring the nearby Walwa-Jingellic walking track.

Tintaldra

Tintaldra’s riverside location, the charming Tintaldra Hotel pub, and the historic general store provide a most welcoming stop along the route. Stay in the Tintaldra caravan park or simply enjoy sweeping views of the Murray River and the charm of this quiet, heritage-rich town.

Towong

Towong racecourse is famous for its annual horse race and beautiful 1911 grandstand – featured in the film, Phar Lap. This quiet town offers stunning riverside scenery, while the recently opened Towong Walking Track hosts 'Your Song', a steel sculpture depicting two Brolgas that majestically rise above the Cumbungi (reeds).

Mountains

The mountains are spectacular here, from the majestic Snowy Mountains backdrop to Mt Burrowa, Pine Mountain (check out the visitor centre), Mt Granya, and Mt Mittamatite – each with unique trails, breathtaking views, and stunning nature.

Corryong

Historic Corryong is one of the two eastern points of the route. Known for its connection to The Man from Snowy River and its annual festival, Corryong hosts plenty of accommodation – including the Corryong Caravan Park – cafes, pubs, accommodation, scenic walks and lookouts.

Khancoban

Nestled in the Snowy Mountains’ foothills, Khancoban is one of the two eastern points of the route. Khancoban is a picturesque village known for fishing, hiking, and mountain views. There are a few good accommodation options, including the Khancoban Caravan Park.
